Maintaining and Caring for Your Moroccan Rug

When it comes to caring for your Moroccan rug, our advice is simple: don’t overthink it. These rugs are designed to endure the test of time and the rugged climate of Morocco. However, to ensure your rug remains in top condition, here are some easy-to-follow care tips for your home.

  1. Fresh Air and Shaking

If space allows, take your rug outside and give it a good shake every couple of weeks. This helps to prevent dust and dirt from settling into the fibres and keeps your rug fresh.

  1. Vacuuming and Spot Cleaning

For larger rugs or when outdoor shaking isn’t an option, regular vacuuming works well. When vacuuming, avoid using a brush attachment or rotating motor head, as these can pull at the natural fibers and cause wear over time. Instead, use a flat nozzle attachment on low power, moving in the direction of the pile for high-pile rugs. You can also vacuum the underside to remove any dirt lodged deep within the fibers.

In case of spills, spot cleaning is effective. Although our dyes are colorfast, we recommend minimal water and a mild, non-chemical dish soap. Dab the area with a towel to absorb excess liquid without saturating the rug.

  1. Sunlight and Rotation

Direct sunlight can gradually fade your rug’s colors. To avoid uneven fading, rotate your rug every three to six months. This practice also helps prevent bacteria build-up under furniture. If possible, place your rug in an area with indirect sunlight or periodically move it to rest from harsh light. Over time, even as colors soften, the rug develops more character and charm.

  1. Shedding and Loose Threads

Shedding is normal for natural wool rugs and usually subsides after a few weeks. If you notice a loose knot, resist the urge to pull it. Simply trim the loose thread to match the rug’s pile height.

With these care tips, your Moroccan rug can last for generations, growing richer as it ages. Enjoy your timeless piece for a lifetime of beauty and comfort.
